Menopause

What is it?

The process of menopause involves a decline ovarian function, resulting in a decreased frequency and eventual cessation of ovulation. The result is that the body's levels of oestrogen and progesterone are drastically reduced, which can cause a range of symptoms including;

  • sudden irregularity of menstrual flow
  • vasomotor flushes (hot flushes)
  • irritability
  • mood swings
  • depression
  • weight increase
  • fluid retention
  • vaginal dryness
  • loss of libido
  • skin and hair changes
  • and sleep disturbances

This decline in oestrogen production can increase in the risk of more serious health conditions including osteoporosis, high cholesterol and heart attack.
