What is Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS)?
Premenstrual Syndrome, or PMS, is the name given to the group of symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle.
Symptoms can begin post ovulation and usually become worse just before the period begins. These symptoms can be psychological, behavioural or physical and many women suffer from a combination of these.
Symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome can include:
- Pain before or with the onset of bleeding
- Breast swelling
- Fluid retention
- Bloating
- Weight Gain
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Fatigue
- Inability to handle stress
- Depression
- Headache
- Migraine
- Food cravings
Types of PMS
Premenstrual Syndrome has been sub-divided into 5 categories:- PMS A: Symptoms include anxiety, mood swings, nervous tension, irritability, often beginning post ovulation and intensifying a few days before menstruation begins.
- PMS C: Symptoms include food cravings, increased appetite, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and palpitations.
- PMS D: Presents as depression and often has associated symptoms of forgetfulness, crying, confusion and insomnia.
- PMS H: Symptoms include hydration or fluid retention, weight gain, swelling of extremities, abdominal bloating, breast swelling and tenderness.
- PMS P: The main symptom is a reduced pain threshold. Sufferers of PMSP commonly experience lower abdominal or pelvic and back pain with a heightened pain sensation in general.
Some women do not experience any noticeable symptoms with their menstrual cycle. Others will suffer from one or more of the types of PMS listed above while a few will suffer a severe form of depression that is now termed ‘premenstrual dysphoric disorder’ or PMDD.
These five categories are based on the hormonal, biochemical and/or nutritional causes behind PMS and, whilst many women fit into more than one group, this can be a helpful guide for naturopathic treatment approaches.
